As kitten season reaches its peak, Whatcom Feline Alliance is experiencing record demand for affordable spay and neuter assistance, Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR), and community support programs across Whatcom County.
The foster-based nonprofit is asking the community to help expand access to prevention services that reduce feline overpopulation before unwanted litters are born. The surge in demand has strained funding, heightening the need for community support.
Whatcom Feline Alliance, founded in 2019 by Chelsea Beaugez, believes the most effective way to reduce feline suffering is through prevention. The organization works directly with pet owners, caregivers, and community cat caretakers by removing barriers that often prevent cats from receiving timely spay and neuter services.
Unlike many rescue organizations, Whatcom Feline Alliance provides personalized support from start to finish. Services include appointment scheduling, transportation assistance, humane trap and carrier loans, pre-surgery preparation, and aftercare guidance, making veterinary care more accessible for families facing financial, transportation, or logistical challenges.
"If you can send a text, we can help get your cat fixed. Prevention changes everything, and every cat we help today prevents generations of suffering tomorrow," said Chelsea Beaugez, founder of Whatcom Feline Alliance.
The effects reach beyond individual cats. Preventing unplanned litters helps reduce overcrowding in shelters and rescues, lowers euthanasia rates, improves neighborhood relationships, and creates healthier outcomes for both cats and the communities where they live.
Demand is escalating rapidly. One of the organization's longtime veterinary partners, Dr. Christine Monroe, DVM of Spay Neuter Northwest, recently celebrated performing more than 10,000 spay and neuter surgeries, highlighting both the scale of the challenge and the life-changing impact of accessible sterilization programs.
As kitten season continues, Whatcom Feline Alliance is encouraging residents to support its mission by donating, volunteering, fostering cats, or simply helping spread awareness about the importance of early spay and neuter intervention. Every contribution helps prevent future suffering while improving the quality of life for cats already living in Whatcom County.
"Our goal has always been simple," Beaugez said. "Prevent suffering before it begins and make life better for the cats already here."
