Verizon has announced the availability of Apple's latest flagship smartphones, the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, along with a suite of new devices and service plans that could reshape how consumers upgrade their phones. The carrier's offer allows customers to get the new iPhone 18 Pro without trading in a device, and then upgrade to a new iPhone every year. This move eliminates a longstanding barrier for many consumers who lack a device to trade in, potentially accelerating upgrade cycles and increasing customer retention.
The iPhone 18 Pro lineup features a redesigned 48MP Fusion main camera with variable aperture and is powered by the A20 Pro chip, which Apple says delivers the greatest sustained performance in iPhone history. The iPhone 18 Pro Max offers the biggest jump in battery life in iPhone history. Verizon is positioning these devices alongside its new Simplicity Pro plan, which includes unlimited 5G Ultra Wideband data, 10GB of premium hotspot data, and standard roaming in Canada and Mexico, all for $80 per month after Auto Pay and switch discounts, plus taxes and fees.
Customers can get the iPhone 18 Pro today without needing to trade in a device, and return it in good working condition to upgrade to a new model every year. For those who do trade in, Verizon offers up to $1,200 off a new iPhone with an eligible myPlan when adding a new line, or up to $1,020 off when upgrading an existing line. The carrier also introduced Verizon Loyalty, which eliminates activation and upgrade fees for all postpaid customers and provides 3% back in Verizon Dollars every month. These loyalty perks could reduce churn and attract new subscribers.
The announcement also includes the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4, which feature the most accurate heart rate sensor in a wearable device, according to Apple. Both models include a new Health Sensing System and the S11 chip, offering a readiness score and higher-frequency heart rate measurements. AirPods 5 were also unveiled, with the industry's best Active Noise Cancellation in an open-ear design, removing up to 50 percent more external noise compared to the previous generation.
Perhaps the most notable new device is the iPhone Duo, Apple's first foldable iPhone. It features a 7.6-inch internal display and a 5.4-inch external display, powered by the A20 Pro chip. The iPhone Duo is available in star white and night sky, while the iPhone 18 Pro models come in black, silver, glacier, and a new wine color. All new models support eSIM, and the eSIM-only versions of the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max offer two additional hours of video playback.
Verizon's strategy underscores a broader shift in the wireless industry toward simplified pricing and loyalty rewards. By removing activation and upgrade fees and offering annual upgrades without trade-in, Verizon aims to differentiate itself in a saturated market. The move could pressure competitors to simplify their own offers and may lead to more flexible upgrade options across the industry. For consumers, the implications are significant: easier access to the latest technology, potential cost savings, and a more straightforward wireless experience.
Preorders for the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, Apple Watch Series 12, Apple Watch Ultra 4, and AirPods 5 begin September 12 at 8 a.m. ET, with broad availability on September 18.
