Trilogy Metals Secures $35.6 Million U.S. Government Investment to Advance Alaska Mining Projects

Trilogy Metals Inc. (NYSE American: TMQ) (TSX: TMQ) has completed a strategic equity investment by the U.S. Department of War totaling approximately US$35.6 million, the company announced. The investment, made across transactions with Trilogy and South32 Limited, will be directed to Ambler Metals LLC, the 50/50 joint venture between Trilogy and South32, to advance exploration and development of the Upper Kobuk Mineral Projects in northwestern Alaska. These projects include the high-grade Arctic polymetallic deposit and the Bornite copper-cobalt deposit. The U.S. government's involvement signals a significant shift in domestic resource policy, as it seeks to secure reliable supplies of critical minerals for national security and economic resilience.

The Arctic deposit is one of the highest-grade polymetallic volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits in the world, containing copper, zinc, lead, gold, and silver. The Bornite deposit is a carbonate replacement deposit with high-grade copper and cobalt mineralization. Both are located within the Ambler Mining District, which is considered one of the richest and most prospective copper-dominant districts globally. The district spans approximately 190,929 hectares and is situated on lands owned by NANA Regional Corporation, an Alaska Native Corporation. Ambler Metals has an agreement with NANA that provides a framework for exploration and development in cooperation with local communities.

The U.S. Department of War also committed to work in good faith to help facilitate financing for construction of the proposed 211-mile Ambler Road, in coordination with the State of Alaska and the Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority. The road would provide essential access to the remote mining district, enabling the transportation of materials, equipment, and personnel. Without such infrastructure, development of these deposits would be economically challenging. The government's commitment to the road underscores the strategic importance of the project.

For investors, the news is significant because it demonstrates federal backing for a junior mining company, reducing political and financial risks associated with permitting and infrastructure. The investment also validates the technical merit of the Upper Kobuk Mineral Projects. As the world transitions to renewable energy and electric vehicles, demand for copper and cobalt is expected to soar. The Arctic and Bornite deposits could become key sources of these minerals for the United States, reducing reliance on foreign suppliers.

Trilogy Metals' vision is to develop the Ambler Mining District into a premier North American copper producer while protecting and respecting subsistence livelihoods. The company holds a 50 percent interest in Ambler Metals, which has a 100 percent interest in the Upper Kobuk Mineral Projects. South32, a globally diversified mining and metals company, exercised its option to form the joint venture on December 19, 2019.
