Stonegate Capital Partners has updated its coverage on Burcon Nutrascience Corporation (TSX: BU), highlighting the company's transition from technology validation to commercial execution. Burcon's first quarter fiscal 2027 results demonstrate significant progress, with revenue increasing 54% quarter-over-quarter and 273% year-over-year to $1.28 million. The number of active buying customers grew to 40 from over 30 previously, and repeat purchasing continues to build, providing better visibility into recurring demand.
Despite the positive revenue trends, the quarter included a $1.76 million inventory write-down, which masked a much narrower underlying gross loss. The focus now shifts to whether improving customer traction can support the sizable second-half revenue ramp required to reach the company's prior CY26 sales objective. Burcon is also expanding its Galesburg capacity and moving toward positive cash flow, which remain key execution levers.
Capacity and funding are now critical as the company plans an up-to-$8.1 million financing to bridge liquidity and support the production ramp. The second-half ramp remains substantial, with the prior $10 million CY26 sales target requiring roughly $7.9 million of second-half sales. Achieving positive cash flow remains an important milestone for the company.
Burcon's results underscore the progress in commercial adoption, but the company faces significant execution challenges ahead. The market will be watching closely to see if the momentum can be sustained and accelerated to meet the ambitious sales target.
