Stonegate Capital Partners Initiates Coverage on MarketWise, Highlighting Operational Turnaround

Stonegate Capital Partners has initiated coverage on MarketWise (NASDAQGM: MKTW), drawing attention to the company's improving operating profile following a period of decline. According to the research report, MarketWise exited fiscal year 2025 with stronger fundamentals, as increasing demand and better execution offset the lagged effects of weaker prior-period billings on reported revenue.

Key financial metrics underscore the turnaround. For the full fiscal year 2025, billings rose 13.4% year-over-year to $271.2 million, while cash flow from operations (CFFO) improved significantly to $46.0 million from a negative $22.2 million in FY24. However, reported revenue declined 19.7% to $328.1 million, and net income fell 31.2% to $64.0 million. Management identified the fourth quarter of 2024 as the inflection point after 12 consecutive quarters of decline, with momentum accelerating through FY25. In the fourth quarter of FY25, billings surged 42.0% year-over-year to $78.9 million, and CFFO increased to $24.2 million from $6.0 million in the same period a year earlier. Revenue in Q4 FY25 was $83.3 million, and net income was $14.0 million.

The report emphasizes that the underlying turnaround is real despite the lagged impact on GAAP revenue. A key driver has been a significant improvement in customer quality. Paid subscribers declined 26.1% year-over-year to 374,000, but net revenue retention rebounded sharply to 91% from 53% in the prior year. Average revenue per user (ARPU) rose 70.1% to $670, and higher-spend subscribers now represent a larger share of the customer base. This indicates a smaller but more valuable and loyal customer base.

MarketWise also maintains a strong balance sheet, ending FY25 with $70.1 million in cash and no debt. The company has been returning capital to shareholders, paying $15.7 million in dividends and repurchasing $3.4 million of stock during the year. Additionally, the regular dividend was raised by 25%. Looking ahead, management guided for approximately $300 million in billings and $50 million in CFFO for fiscal year 2026.
