Regentis Biomaterials Ltd. (NYSE American: RGNT) announced on July 20 that it has received a notice of allowance from the Japan Patent Office for a patent covering its organic solvent-free manufacturing process and ready-to-use liquid formulation for GelrinC, its cell-free hydrogel for knee cartilage repair. This allowance follows a similar patent grant in the United States, extending the company's intellectual property (IP) footprint into Japan, one of the world's largest cartilage-repair markets.

The patented process is notable for delivering a five-fold increase in yield compared to previous methods, along with simplified production and commercial scalability. This is critical for making an off-the-shelf cartilage product commercially viable at scale, as it reduces manufacturing costs and complexity. The company believes that this manufacturing and IP strength is just as important as clinical performance in addressing the largest unmet needs in orthopedics.

The milestone comes as Regentis advances European commercialization and passes the halfway mark in enrollment for its pivotal U.S. trial. Aging populations are pushing joint disease higher on the orthopedic agenda, with cartilage damage representing a significant unmet need. Current treatments have demonstrated clinical utility but remain difficult to deliver efficiently and economically on a large scale. Off-the-shelf therapies like GelrinC are designed to fill this gap, offering a single procedure of about 10 minutes with no cell harvesting or laboratory processing.

Regentis's expanding IP portfolio, now covering the U.S. and Japan, positions the company to capitalize on the growing global demand for effective and scalable cartilage repair solutions.
