Quantum BioPharma Advances Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Toward Phase 2 Trials

Quantum BioPharma Ltd. (NASDAQ: QNTM) (CSE: QNTM) is advancing its lead drug candidate, Lucid-MS, toward Phase 2 clinical trials for the treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS). Unlike conventional MS therapies that target the immune system, Lucid-MS is a first-in-class, non-immunomodulatory neuroprotective agent designed to directly protect the myelin sheath, which is damaged in MS. The company recently completed Phase 1 safety and tolerability studies, paving the way for the next stage of development.

According to a BioMedWire editorial featuring the company, Lucid-MS has shown the ability to prevent and reverse myelin degradation in preclinical studies, supported by over a decade of scientific research. Quantum BioPharma is also collaborating with researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital to validate a novel PET imaging technique that could enable direct measurement of myelin integrity in MS patients, potentially revolutionizing how treatment efficacy is assessed.

The editorial also highlighted broader developments in neurological and immune-mediated disease sectors, including programs from major pharmaceutical companies such as Sanofi (NASDAQ: SNY), Roche Holding AG (OTCQX: RHHBY), Biogen Inc. (NASDAQ: BIIB), and Clene Inc. (NASDAQ: CLNN). These comparisons underscore the competitive landscape and the unique positioning of Lucid-MS as a potential disease-modifying therapy that addresses the underlying pathology of MS rather than just managing symptoms.

Quantum BioPharma is a biopharmaceutical company focused on building a portfolio of innovative treatments for neurodegenerative and metabolic disorders, as well as alcohol misuse disorders. Through its wholly owned subsidiary, Lucid Psycheceuticals Inc., the company is advancing Lucid-MS as a patented new chemical entity. Beyond MS, Quantum has interests in the over-the-counter market through its spinout Unbuzzd Wellness Inc., which markets UNBUZZD(TM), a product aimed at alcohol consumption moderation. Quantum retains a 19.84% ownership stake in Unbuzzd and is entitled to royalty payments of 7% of sales until $250 million is reached, after which the royalty drops to 3% in perpetuity.

The progression of Lucid-MS to Phase 2 trials represents a significant milestone for Quantum BioPharma and the MS community. If successful, Lucid-MS could offer a new therapeutic option for the approximately 2.8 million people worldwide living with MS, many of whom do not respond adequately to existing immunomodulatory treatments. The potential for a neuroprotective therapy that directly preserves myelin could change the treatment paradigm for this debilitating disease.
