The largest gathering of electric aircraft ever assembled at Oshkosh AirVenture has challenged prevailing industry narratives, revealing that the electric aviation revolution extends far beyond flying cars and urban air taxis. Lisa Wright, founder of Landings, attended both the main EAA AirVenture event, which drew 700,000 attendees and 20,000 campers, and the Vertical Flight Society's Electric Aircraft Symposium. Her observations highlight a market that is broader and more immediate than commonly portrayed.
While eVTOL aircraft like those from Joby and Archer dominate headlines, Wright noted significant representation of electrified traditional aircraft. 'Cessna Caravans that land on water are being electrified. There were a lot of Pipistrels. Traditional aircraft that are being converted to electric as well,' she said. These conversions are operational now, such as the eBeavers she observed, expanding the use case ecosystem immediately without waiting for FAA certification of novel designs.
The market's diversity was further underscored by companies like Air EV, an Israeli firm focusing on producing 30,000 aircraft per year—a scale comparable to automotive manufacturing. Wright explained, 'They're really looking at it as basically wanting these sold like cars. The new Mosaic rule has opened up a lot of opportunity.' This production vision signals a shift from boutique aircraft to mass-market adoption, which only makes sense if the market extends beyond commuter air taxis.
Skyfly is another example, pursuing Mosaic-level approvals for light sport and non-commercial aircraft, freeing them from traditional commercial restrictions. At Oshkosh, the moment that crystallized this shift occurred during a presentation by Tim Jackson, author of 'Dude, Where's My Flying Car.' As he discussed electric aircraft futures, a Beta aircraft took off outside, prompting the audience to rush out and watch. Wright recounted, 'Beta was saying that particular aircraft has flown 60,000 miles, and their fleet that they're testing right now has flown 175,000 miles.' These are not just prototypes; they are accumulating significant operational miles, informing certification and readiness.
The broader lesson from Oshkosh, with its 20,000 diverse aircraft, is that innovation in aviation thrives on diversity. Wright observed, 'When you see 20,000 planes in front of you, and they're all totally different – some 70 years old, some 10 years old – you realize that innovation has always meant every plane is so totally different.' This suggests there is no single right design for electric aircraft, and the industry is in a phase of experimentation, which is healthy.
For infrastructure developers, the implications are significant. The electric aviation market is not waiting for 2028 or 2029; it is arriving now across multiple categories. Conversions of existing aircraft are already operational, manufacturing at scale is being planned, and use cases in emergency services, agriculture, and logistics are being validated. The infrastructure opportunity extends beyond urban vertiports to rural networks supporting these diverse operations. Landings is building a network of 2,000+ rural locations to meet this demand, as Wright's observations at Oshkosh confirm that the future of electric aviation is broader and closer than many projections suggest.
