Opawica Explorations Inc. (TSXV: OPW) (FSE: A2PEAD) (OTCQB: OPWEF) has announced a comprehensive exploration update for its 100%-owned Arrowhead Gold Property in the Abitibi Greenstone Belt of Quebec. The company is set to commence a 10,000-metre drilling program, for which it already holds permits covering 25 drill-pad locations. This marks a critical juncture for the property, as the planned drilling is intended to systematically test high-priority targets derived from one of the most extensive modern geological datasets assembled over the property.
The Arrowhead property is strategically located adjacent to Agnico Eagle's LaRonde Complex, which has produced over eight million ounces of gold since 1988. While mineralization on adjacent properties is not necessarily indicative of Arrowhead's potential, the proximity to such a prolific operation underscores the district's prospectivity. Opawica believes that Arrowhead's combination of historical high-grade gold occurrences, extensive historical workings, modern drill-confirmed mineralization, and advanced geophysical and seismic data positions it for a major exploration phase.
Arrowhead is not an early-stage concept; its exploration history spans nearly a century, beginning with prospecting around 1920. Historical work included trenching, pitting, underground workings, diamond drilling, and sampling of multiple mineralized structures, focusing on shear zones with quartz-carbonate veins associated with free gold. Early exploration reported gold values of approximately 45.05 g/t Au, and chip samples returned up to 90.75 g/t Au over 1.0 metre. Although these results have not been independently verified, they highlight the property's historical significance.
What differentiates Arrowhead today is the extensive modern geological information layered over the historical data. In 2022, Opawica completed its inaugural modern drill program, comprising 4,306 metres across 14 holes, with 1,590 rock samples submitted for assay. The program successfully confirmed gold mineralization, with 11 holes intersecting gold zones grading greater than 1.0 g/t Au along an approximately one-kilometre strike length. Notable results included 18.7 g/t Au over 0.35 metres with 0.72% Cu in hole AR-22-01, 1.52 g/t Au over 14.8 metres in AR-22-04, and broader anomalous zones extending up to 29.5 metres. These intervals are core lengths, and true widths have not been determined.
The 2022 drilling identified gold in two principal settings: shear zones with quartz-carbonate-tourmaline veins within mafic volcanic rocks, and mineralized felsic tuffs containing quartz-tourmaline veining. Significantly, nine target zones remained untested after that program. Opawica views the 2022 results as confirmation, and the upcoming program is designed to test scale.
The planned 10,000-metre drill program will target high-priority zones generated from advanced 3D geological modelling, artificial-intelligence-assisted targeting, and seismic surveys. The company aims to test the continuity, extensions, and potential depth of known mineralization. With all permits in place, Arrowhead is built for the drill bit, and the next phase of exploration could unlock the property's full potential.
