Offworld Industries, an American space construction company, has revealed that its CEO John Blincow recently returned from Tokyo after an exploratory meeting at Kajima Corporation's headquarters. The meeting brought together representatives from Kajima, JAXA, Nippon Travel Agency, and technical specialists focused on systems for future human activity in space. While no formal agreements were announced, the discussion underscores a significant shift in the global space economy: the focus is moving beyond launch capabilities toward the construction of durable, large-scale infrastructure in orbit.
According to Offworld, the meeting addressed the growing demand for orbital facilities such as point-to-point space transportation, lunar tourism, orbital hospitality, data centers, fuel depots, spacecraft maintenance yards, manufacturing facilities, and rotating habitats. John Blincow emphasized that all these applications share a common requirement: construction methods capable of building large structures in space. He stated, "Humanity needs construction methods capable of building large structures in space. That is the problem Offworld Industries was created to solve."
The timing of the meeting is notable, as Japan has been actively exploring space travel initiatives. Nippon Travel Agency has advanced its Galaxy Project, while Kajima and Kyoto University have publicly explored artificial-gravity habitat concepts like Lunar Glass for future lunar habitation. Blincow noted that Japan's combination of construction, robotics, space science, and precision engineering makes it an ideal partner for discussions on space development. "The future of space is not only about launch vehicles," he said. "It is about what we build after we get there."
Offworld's technology roadmap focuses on construction systems for large rotating space stations and orbital platforms. The company believes that rotating structures capable of producing artificial gravity will be essential for longer-duration human activity in space. Blincow explained that the design space now includes orbital hotels, crew-serviceable data centers, fuel depots, maintenance facilities, logistics hubs, and manufacturing platforms. "The limiting question is no longer whether these destinations are imaginable," he said. "The question is how they can be built safely, economically, and at scale."
One area of growing interest is orbital data centers. As terrestrial data infrastructure faces constraints around power, cooling, and land use, some concepts propose uncrewed satellite platforms. However, Offworld is exploring a different approach: larger, human-tended orbital facilities that combine data infrastructure with inspection, maintenance, and repair capabilities. Blincow acknowledged that space-based compute will not replace terrestrial data centers, but for certain workloads, orbital infrastructure could become a serious complement. "If that happens, the ability to service, expand, and reconfigure those assets in orbit could become a major architectural advantage," he said.
The company emphasized that future space construction will require collaboration across aerospace, civil engineering, robotics, energy systems, life support, transportation, finance, tourism, advanced manufacturing, and digital infrastructure. Offworld views space construction as the next frontier of terrestrial industry, not a departure from it. The Tokyo meeting did not create a formal consortium, but Offworld supports the formation of an international space construction ecosystem. Blincow concluded, "Every serious space economy eventually becomes a construction economy. Launch gets us to orbit. Construction determines what we can do once we arrive."
