The American Heart Association announced today that Bradley A. Maron, M.D., FAHA, has assumed the role of editor-in-chief of Circulation, the Association’s flagship peer-reviewed journal. Maron, a board-certified clinical cardiologist and distinguished researcher, is recognized globally for his work in pulmonary hypertension, right heart failure, and cardiomyopathy. His appointment signals a continued commitment to publishing rigorous, practice-changing science and a potential shift toward greater emphasis on precision medicine and pulmonary vascular disease.
Maron succeeds Joseph A. Hill, M.D., FAHA, who led the journal since 2016, and Joseph Loscalzo, M.D., Ph.D., FAHA, who served from 2004-2016. Maron’s career bridges patient care, translational science, and precision medicine, with a focus on how conditions affecting the blood vessels within the lungs impact the heart. He currently serves as senior associate dean for precision medicine, director of the Pulmonary Hypertension Center at the University of Maryland Medical Center, and the Melvin Sharovsky Professor of Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He also co-executive directs the University of Maryland Institute for Health Computing.
In his new role, Maron plans to introduce several new features to Circulation, including a Clinician Lighthouse article for expert-guided interpretation of diagnostic tests, a Clinician’s Corner for real-world clinical decision-making, and a Patient’s Corner for the public. The journal will also feature graphic abstracts, video commentaries, and an accelerated, more transparent review process. These changes aim to make the journal more engaging and accessible to clinicians, researchers, and the public.
The announcement comes as the American Heart Association continues to support editorial independence across its portfolio of 14 scientific journals. “Dr. Maron’s appointment underscores the Association’s commitment to advancing transformative science,” said Shelley Miyamoto, M.D., FAHA, chair of the Association’s Scientific Publishing Committee. Maron expressed deep honor and gratitude, stating, “Our mission is to reinvigorate the type of cardiovascular science and medicine published in Circulation, and fast track that information to our readers with additional transparency.”
Maron is joined by a new editorial team, including Executive Editor Karen E. Joynt Maddox, M.D., M.P.H., FAHA, and Deputy Executive Editor Sadiya S. Khan, M.D., M.Sc., FAHA. Ten deputy editors will oversee specific sections, including Fundamental Sciences, Clinical Trials, and AI for Process and Science. Maron’s scientific impact includes co-authoring over 260 publications, six patents, and leading federally funded research for more than two decades.
