Microsoft has pulled forward its target date for building a practical quantum computer from 2033 to 2029, crediting a major jump in chip performance. Zulfi Alam, Microsoft’s VP for quantum, announced the new target last week alongside the launch of Majorana 2, the follow-on to Majorana 1.
The announcement marks a significant acceleration in Microsoft's quantum computing ambitions. The company's earlier roadmap had set 2033 as the milestone for a scalable quantum machine, but advancements in topological qubit technology have enabled a faster timeline. Majorana 2 builds on the foundational work of its predecessor, leveraging Microsoft's unique approach to creating qubits that are more stable and less prone to errors.
Microsoft’s news arrived in a week of broad quantum activity. Quantinuum, which emerged from Honeywell, listed on the Nasdaq and raised $1.68 billion. D-Wave Quantum Inc. (NYSE: QBTS) published a revised product roadmap, setting its sights on a commercial fault-tolerant quantum system by 2032, and JPMorgan Chase also announced it would team up with AMD to explore quantum applications.
The accelerated timeline from Microsoft underscores the intensifying race among tech giants and startups to achieve quantum supremacy, where quantum computers can solve problems that classical computers cannot.
