The Marvin Hamlisch International Music Awards (MHIMA) have announced the launch of their 2026–2027 competition season, inviting youth and emerging composers, songwriters, arrangers, and orchestrators from around the world to participate. Inspired by the legacy of legendary composer Marvin Hamlisch, the awards provide a platform for discovering and encouraging new musical talent.
The competition features updated categories and expanded participation opportunities. Winners will be announced at the late fall 2027 Marvin Hamlisch International Music Awards Presentation at the historic Avon Theatre Film Center in Stamford, Connecticut. Betsy Walters and Peter H. Gistelinck, Co-Founders of MHIMA, stated, "Marvin Hamlisch believed deeply in nurturing talent and opening doors for the next generation of artists. These Awards celebrate that spirit by connecting emerging creators with mentors, industry professionals, and opportunities that can help launch and sustain meaningful careers in music."
Categories are divided into Youth and Emerging Divisions. In Film/Media Scoring, participants score a short film. Classical Composition requires an original concert work based on a creative prompt. Musical Theatre Composition calls for an original piece with music and lyrics from a dramatic scenario. A newly expanded Arranging & Orchestration category invites arrangements inspired by Marvin Hamlisch's musical legacy.
The competition is open globally. The Youth Division is for entrants under 18, and the Emerging Division is for those 18 or older who do not earn the majority of their income through full-time composing. All works must be original; use of generative AI, stock music, or pre-recorded compositions is prohibited.
Beyond competition, all nominees are invited to an exclusive Professional Development and Networking Day in New York City, featuring discussions, mentorship, and career guidance with leading music industry executives. Submissions undergo anonymous evaluation by professional judges based on musical literacy, creativity, technological proficiency, narrative connection, and artistic excellence. Up to five nominees per category advance to a Distinguished Jury. Winners receive official awards, nominees receive plaques, and prize packages may be awarded by sponsors. Selected winning works may be considered for publication by Concord, subject to independent review.
The awards honor Marvin Hamlisch's legacy as a Pulitzer Prize, Oscar, Grammy, Emmy, Tony, and Golden Globe winner.
