Kajy Law Firm, PLLC is calling attention to a serious Detroit streetcar crash that left an Uber passenger with significant injuries, major medical bills, and an uncertain path toward recovery. The crash, which occurred on Nov. 30, 2023, involved an approximately 88,000-pound QLINE streetcar and an Uber vehicle traveling on Woodward Avenue. The incident has drawn public attention because of the severity of the victim's injuries, the lawsuit filed against the Regional Transit Authority (RTA), and the RTA's claim of governmental immunity.
The injured Detroit man was riding in an Uber when the QLINE streetcar struck the vehicle. He later described the crash as devastating. Since then, he has reported a month-long hospital stay, cervical spine fusion surgery, the use of a cane, an inability to work, and approximately $500,000 in medical bills. The firm is pursuing legal action against the RTA, which oversees the QLINE, raising a direct question: when someone is seriously injured in a crash involving public transportation, what responsibility should the involved entity carry?
"We filed this suit because he has $500,000 in medical bills and someone needs to pay for being at fault for this case," Kajy said. Thomas Kerr, lead attorney at Kajy Law Firm, PLLC, has also addressed internal reports connected to the collision, reportedly including video of the crash, and Kerr described the incident as preventable. The firm believes the case has broader importance for Detroit residents who rely on rideshare vehicles, public transit, and busy shared corridors such as Woodward Avenue. Serious crashes involving transit vehicles can create complex legal questions, especially when government immunity is raised. But the firm maintains that injured people still deserve transparency, a careful review of the evidence, and a fair opportunity to seek recovery.
"This case is about accountability," the firm said. "When a person is seriously injured, unable to return to work, and left with overwhelming medical bills, the focus should be on facts, responsibility, and making sure the injured person is not left behind." The court has not yet ruled on whether governmental immunity applies. The RTA has declined to comment because of the pending litigation.
