Romanella points to the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team's 'Miracle on Ice' as a prime example. 'AI could have analyzed the Soviet team's strengths, predicted their strategies, and calculated the odds. But AI could not have done what Herb Brooks did: build belief in a group of young men who had no business winning that game on paper,' he wrote. 'That moment wasn't about data. It was about heart. It was about leadership.'
Drawing from his own career at UPS, Romanella recalls being chosen to lead the integration of Mailboxes Etc. despite lacking traditional qualifications. The decision was based not on algorithms but on a leader's faith in him—what Romanella calls 'AIAI' or 'Am I All In?' He explains, 'The data my CEO and COO used wasn't a spreadsheet. It wasn't an algorithm. It was AIAI. They needed someone who was all in. Someone who acted like an owner.'
