HeartBeam (NASDAQ: BEAT) has launched a new pilot study to evaluate its proprietary on-demand 12-lead ECG patch for detecting coronary artery disease and ischemia, according to a press release issued Wednesday. The study will test the patch's ability to detect inadequate blood flow and oxygen supply to tissue, or ischemia, which is often a precursor to heart attacks. Current patch-based monitors typically only track heart rate and rhythm, missing critical signs of ischemia that require a 12-lead ECG for accurate diagnosis. If successful, the HeartBeam patch could enable earlier detection and intervention for patients with coronary artery disease, potentially reducing mortality and healthcare costs.
The pilot study is part of HeartBeam's broader strategy to commercialize its technology and address the growing burden of cardiovascular disease. According to the World Health Organization, cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death globally, with an estimated 17.9 million lives lost each year. The ability to monitor patients continuously and obtain on-demand clinical-grade ECGs could transform how physicians manage patients with known or suspected coronary artery disease.
HeartBeam's technology has already generated interest from the medical community, and the company expects to report results from the pilot study in the coming months. The company also noted that the study will help refine the patch's design and functionality before pursuing regulatory clearance.
