GeoVax Labs, Inc. (Nasdaq: GOVX) has expressed support for the newly launched global mpox vaccine stockpile, a Gavi-funded initiative coordinated by the International Coordinating Group (ICG) on Vaccine Provision, which includes WHO, UNICEF, Médecins Sans Frontières, and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. The stockpile, announced on August 27 and slated to begin operations later this month, aims to provide countries with timely and equitable access to mpox vaccines during future outbreaks, addressing gaps highlighted during the 2024 public health emergency.
David A. Dodd, Chairman and CEO of GeoVax, emphasized the importance of this infrastructure, stating, "Establishing a dedicated global mpox vaccine stockpile is an important step forward in moving from reactive outbreak response toward sustained preparedness. Equitable access requires more than having vaccines available after an outbreak begins. It requires durable procurement infrastructure, sufficient vaccine supply, and the ability to rapidly deliver vaccine protection where it is needed." He also expressed the company's intention to engage with global health partners as GEO-MVA advances toward pivotal Phase 3 evaluation.
The stockpile's strategic objectives include securing a robust product mix and supporting market-shaping efforts to promote sustainable access, underscoring the need for diversified vaccine supply. GeoVax believes that additional qualified MVA vaccine sources, like its GEO-MVA candidate, can help expand supply availability and manufacturing capacity. GEO-MVA is a Modified Vaccinia Ankara (MVA)-based vaccine for mpox and smallpox, and the company has completed key manufacturing, regulatory, and preclinical milestones to support a planned Phase 3 immune-bridging study in Q4 2026. The study will compare GEO-MVA to the licensed MVA-BN vaccine, following European Medicines Agency scientific advice.
GeoVax is also developing next-generation technologies to further enhance global access, including MVA-X for potential single-dose protection, continuous-cell-line manufacturing for scalable production, and microarray-based delivery to simplify administration. These efforts align with the company's broader strategy to address the entire continuum of vaccine access, from supply expansion to field deployment.
As the global stockpile framework develops, GeoVax is engaging with government agencies and international organizations regarding future procurement needs and the potential role of GEO-MVA in strengthening supply resilience. The company looks forward to collaborating with Gavi, WHO, ICG, and other partners to expand sustainable and equitable mpox vaccine access worldwide.
