Earl Martin Phalen, a former U.S. Senate exploratory candidate in Massachusetts, has released a new children's book titled Aim High Dream Big, drawing from his own remarkable journey from foster care to success. Phalen, who spent only 29 minutes with his birth mother before entering the foster system, faced significant early trauma. Despite a challenging start, he graduated from Yale University and Harvard Law School, later founding one of the largest charter school networks in North America, serving 10,000 at-risk children across 23 schools.
Phalen's book aims to inspire children who may feel uncertain about their future. 'I wrote this for kids who are still figuring themselves out, who may feel unsure of where they fit or what they're capable of,' he said. 'My hope is that my story reminds children that no matter what challenge they face, that greatness is already within them.' The book, featuring over 21 illustrations, has been a consistent bestseller on Amazon since its release.
Phalen's accomplishments extend beyond education. He has granted $100 million in scholarships through programs like KC Scholars and created jobs for low-income families via Great Jobs KC and Skilled US. His Summer Advantage USA program has boosted academic growth for 50,000 children. Recognized by First Ladies Michelle Obama and Jill Biden, he also received the Presidential Service Award from Bill Clinton in 1997. In 2024, he was interviewed by Good Morning America about his programs' success.
Last year, Phalen explored a U.S. Senate run but felt called back to his work with children. 'I was overwhelmed by the support from across the nation, but felt called to return to my 10,000 children,' he explained.
