MIDDLESEX COUNTY, CT – A community-wide effort to combat food insecurity culminated on August 5 with “Flood the Food Banks,” a countywide food drive that generated an estimated 2,500 to 3,000 pounds of food for local pantries. The initiative, organized in partnership with Middlesex United Way as part of the Middlesex Pantry Project, distributed contributions to 13 food pantries and food banks across the county, including two smaller direct drop-offs.
Residents donated a variety of non-perishable staples commonly requested by food pantries, including canned vegetables, soup, pasta, rice, peanut butter, cereal, shelf-stable milk, canned tuna and chicken, macaroni and cheese, and other essential items. Collection efforts took place at participating grocery stores and community locations throughout the county.
The Flood Law Firm served as the presenting partner, helping raise awareness and encouraging participation. The firm’s involvement also gave its members the chance to volunteer, interact with residents, and contribute to organizations fighting food insecurity. Brian Flood, a partner at the firm, emphasized the importance of giving back: “Giving back to the communities where we live, work, and serve our clients is an important part of who we are. Flood the Food Banks brought our team together with Middlesex United Way and community members for a meaningful effort that will help support families and individuals throughout Middlesex County.”
A central focus of the initiative was the need for year-round donations. While charitable giving often spikes during the holidays, local food pantries serve families in need throughout the year. By coordinating a summer drive, the event helped ensure these organizations had additional resources to support their communities when demand remains steady.
The event received local media coverage, including reporting from WTNH and a sponsored feature highlighting the partnership. The results underscore the power of community collaboration, with thousands of pounds of food and hundreds of dollars in financial contributions reaching organizations serving Middlesex County residents.
