The American Heart Association has reported that fans at FIFA World Cup fan events in four U.S. host cities have performed over 800,000 chest compressions during Hands-Only CPR training sessions. This initiative, part of the Association's Mobile CPR Unit, has engaged more than 8,000 attendees in Dallas, Atlanta, Philadelphia, and New York, teaching them to recognize cardiac arrest and respond with two simple steps: call 911 and push hard and fast in the center of the chest.
This collaboration with the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) brings lifesaving education to high-energy fan environments surrounding the world's largest sporting event. The effort is one of the most visible components of the Heart Association's Nation of Lifesavers™ movement, which aims to double survival rates from cardiac arrest by 2030. With more than 350,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occurring annually in the U.S., and immediate CPR able to double or triple survival chances, the training addresses a critical gap: many bystanders hesitate due to lack of training.
Nancy Brown, CEO of the American Heart Association, emphasized the impact of the training: "More than 800,000 CPR training compressions practiced by fans are proof of how quickly people can build the confidence to act when every second counts." She noted that over half of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest victims do not receive CPR before professional help arrives, and that the life saved is likely to be someone the rescuer loves.
Andrew Massey, FIFA Medical Director, expressed delight in using football's global reach to promote lifesaving initiatives. "Through FIFA Fan Experiences, we can reach thousands of people and extend these critical skills far beyond the pitch," he said. The American Heart Association, as the worldwide leader in resuscitation science, publishes the official scientific guidelines for CPR. Hands-Only CPR is effective for teens and adults in the first few minutes after collapse, and with nearly three-quarters of cardiac arrests occurring at home, the training is particularly relevant.
