The ETH Learning Factory Zug, a new learning, research, and practice center, is set to be established at Tech Cluster Zug, aiming to connect academic and vocational education. Supported by ETH Zurich, the Canton of Zug, the City of Zug, and nine local companies, the project will create a space where students from ETH Zurich work alongside apprentices, professionals, and researchers on real-world challenges from industry and society.
The initiative focuses on industrial automation and digitalization, sustainable systems, and digital learning. ETH Zurich will operate the factory with around 20 full-time positions on site, overseeing teaching and research activities. The total cost for the first phase over ten years is approximately CHF 110 million, with the Canton of Zug contributing CHF 55 million and the City of Zug CHF 27.5 million. Additional funding comes from industry partners and in-kind contributions from ETH Zurich through faculty teaching.
Funding agreements will be established between the Canton of Zug, Tech Cluster Zug (Urban Assets Zug AG), ETH Zurich, and the ETH Zurich Foundation, covering infrastructure, operations, and development. The City of Zug will also sign a separate agreement with ETH Zurich and its foundation. All agreements run for ten years, with termination options after five years if key milestones are not met.
The project promises significant added value for the region and economy. Companies will benefit from research-based ideas and access to qualified talent, while apprentices and students gain hands-on experience. For the Canton and City of Zug, it offers a new model for talent development and co-education, with long-term benefits for education, research, and the economy. Next steps include parliamentary processes and a popular ballot vote in the City of Zug by the end of 2026. Upon approval, conversion could start in 2027, with building occupation possible in 2029.
