Energy Fuels Inc. (NYSE American: UUUU) (TSX: EFR), a leading U.S. producer of rare earth elements, uranium, and other critical materials, has announced that its terbium oxide has successfully passed all qualifications for use by one of the world's largest manufacturers of rare earth permanent magnets outside China. The Japan-based manufacturer confirmed that the terbium oxide produced at Energy Fuels' White Mesa Mill in Utah meets its specifications and is approved for commercial rare earth permanent magnet production with no further qualification or validation required.
Terbium, a critical element that improves the heat resistance and performance of high-strength neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) permanent magnets, currently commands a market price of approximately $5.5 million per tonne, according to Benchmark Mineral Intelligence. This qualification follows Energy Fuels' earlier announcements regarding the qualification of its neodymium-praseodymium (NdPr) and dysprosium oxides for rare earth permanent magnet manufacturing. With these qualifications in place, Energy Fuels is positioning itself as a key supplier of essential magnet materials outside of China.
The importance of this development cannot be overstated. Rare earth permanent magnets are vital components in electric vehicles, wind turbines, consumer electronics, and defense systems. Currently, China dominates the global supply chain for these materials, controlling over 90% of rare earth processing. By qualifying its terbium oxide for use by a major Japanese magnet manufacturer, Energy Fuels is taking a significant step toward diversifying the supply chain and reducing reliance on Chinese exports. This move aligns with broader Western efforts to secure critical mineral supply chains, as highlighted by recent government initiatives in the U.S. and Europe.
Energy Fuels has been actively expanding its rare earth capabilities. The company plans to close its pending acquisitions of Australian Strategic Materials (ASM) and Vacuumschmelze (VAC), which would make it the leading vertically integrated "mine-to-rare earth permanent magnet" producer in the U.S. and Europe. The NdPr, terbium, and dysprosium oxides produced at the White Mesa Mill would serve as key components of this integrated supply chain. This vertical integration would enable Energy Fuels to control the entire process from mining to magnet production, enhancing supply chain security and potentially stabilizing prices for these critical materials.
In addition to its rare earth operations, Energy Fuels is a major uranium producer and is developing heavy mineral sands projects in Madagascar, Brazil, and Australia. The company's White Mesa Mill is the only fully licensed conventional uranium mill in the U.S., and it also processes rare earth elements and evaluates medical isotope recovery for cancer therapies. This diverse portfolio positions Energy Fuels as a multi-commodity critical materials company, which may appeal to investors seeking exposure to the growing demand for clean energy technologies and defense applications.
The qualification of terbium oxide is a clear signal that Energy Fuels is making tangible progress in its strategic goal to become a leading Western supplier of rare earth permanent magnet materials. As the world transitions to cleaner energy and electric mobility, the demand for these magnets is expected to surge. By securing qualifications from major international manufacturers, Energy Fuels is not only validating the quality of its products but also building the trust and relationships necessary to compete in the global market. This development could have far-reaching implications for the supply chain, potentially encouraging more investment in Western rare earth processing and manufacturing capabilities.
