Enapter AG, a global greentech company specializing in anion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolysers, has received a pilot order worth around EUR 0.5 million from a US drone manufacturer. The order includes AEM electrolysers of the 4.1 series, scheduled for delivery in the fourth quarter of 2026. These hydrogen-producing modules will be integrated into mobile, all-terrain refuelling systems that generate hydrogen on-site from water and solar power, eliminating the need for a grid connection or the complex transport and storage of hydrogen in large compressed gas cylinders.
This development addresses a key challenge in operating hydrogen-powered drones in remote areas, where fuel logistics have traditionally been a significant obstacle. Compared to battery-electric propulsion, hydrogen propulsion offers drones significantly longer flight and mission times, as well as rapid refuelling capabilities. The pilot project is set to open up a new field of application for Enapter, leveraging the modular design of its AEM technology, which features a compact footprint, robust operation, and the ability to scale hydrogen production by adding further modules.

The market for drones with long range and long flight times is growing strongly worldwide, and this order positions Enapter to capitalize on that growth. The company's AEM electrolysers are already in use at more than 360 customers across over 55 countries, and this new application demonstrates the versatility of the technology beyond traditional industrial uses.
Enapter’s AEM technology does not rely on expensive and rare raw materials such as iridium, making it a cost-effective and sustainable solution. The modular design allows for efficient and scalable production of green hydrogen, even when energy supply from solar and wind power fluctuates. This flexibility is particularly valuable in mobile refuelling applications, where hydrogen production must adapt to varying conditions and demand.
The pilot project with the US drone manufacturer is a strategic move for Enapter, as it enters a market with scalable demand. The ability to produce hydrogen off-grid, directly at the point of operation, could be a game-changer for drone operations in remote or disaster-stricken areas, military applications, and other scenarios where traditional fuel supply chains are impractical.
