Dr. Wael Sakr, a prominent figure in pathology and medical education, has announced a national scholarship initiative for undergraduate students aspiring to become medical doctors. The Dr. Wael Sakr Scholarship for Medical Students is now accepting applications from eligible students across the United States. This one-time award of $1,000 is designed to support students who demonstrate academic commitment, a genuine interest in medicine, and a clear desire to contribute positively to healthcare.
The scholarship reflects Dr. Sakr’s professional values, developed over more than four decades in pathology, medical education, and cancer research. By establishing this initiative, Dr. Sakr seeks to recognize undergraduate students who show the motivation, preparation, and sense of purpose needed to pursue a career in medicine. Eligible applicants must be currently enrolled as undergraduate students at an accredited college or university and be on a pre-med track or otherwise pursuing a path toward a career as an MD or DO. They must remain in good academic standing, demonstrate genuine interest and commitment to the medical field, and submit a complete application, including the required essay, by the April 15, 2027 deadline. The required essay gives applicants an opportunity to explain the experiences and motivations shaping their professional aspirations. In 500–750 words, applicants respond to the question: “Dr. Wael Sakr has spent his career advancing medicine through research, mentorship, and a commitment to addressing healthcare disparities. What draws you to a career in medicine, and how do you hope to make a meaningful impact as a future physician?” Applicants are encouraged to provide authentic responses that reflect specific experiences, challenges, or moments that have influenced their decision to pursue medicine.
The winner is scheduled to be announced on May 15, 2027, with notification provided directly by email. Applications can be submitted by email and should include the completed essay along with the applicant’s full name, school, expected graduation date, and contact information. The scholarship is intended to recognize promising undergraduate students wherever they study in the United States, rather than being restricted to a particular city or state.
Dr. Sakr brings substantial experience to the initiative. After completing his medical training at the University of Damascus in Syria, he pursued postgraduate education in the United States, including an Anatomic Pathology residency and a Surgical Pathology fellowship. He joined Wayne State University School of Medicine in 1990 and later served as Chairman of its Department of Pathology from 2008 to 2022. In 2022, Dr. Sakr became Dean of the Wayne State University School of Medicine. His research career includes extensive work in prostate cancer, particularly the study of racial disparities affecting disease incidence, progression, and outcomes among African American men. Dr. Sakr has contributed to more than 200 peer-reviewed publications and has supported advances in pathology, cancer research, and medical education through research, teaching, mentorship, and institutional leadership.
