Centenario Gold Corp. (TSXV:CTG) has reported high-grade copper mineralization from the first phase of exploration at its Los Reyes project in Chihuahua, Mexico. The company conducted mapping and sampling of old mine dumps and underground workings along the intrusive-limestone contact zone, where copper-rich skarn zones are present. The project, located 225 km south of Chihuahua City, consists of two mineral claims: El Rey (36.0 hectares) and El Rey 2 (9.3 hectares). Historical records indicate that approximately 200,000 tons of copper-zinc-silver material were mined from Los Reyes by ASARCO in the late 1800s to early 1900s.
The exploration program included geological reconnaissance and collection of 58 rock samples from surface outcrops, waste dumps, and underground workings at the Tuesda and Jibosa mines. The samples were submitted to ALS Chemex for analysis using fire assay for gold and acid digestion for 34 other elements. Results are expected by mid-June. The company noted that copper mineralization occurs as chalcopyrite, bornite, malachite, azurite, and chalcocite within irregular, semi-tabular lenses up to 60 meters wide. Previous reports indicate some zones mined by ASARCO exceeded 125 meters in length.
At the Tuesda shaft, the mineralized zone showed thickness up to 20 meters, while at Jibosa, the thickness did not exceed 15 meters. Higher sulfide content is anticipated further north of the Tuesda shaft. Fragments of magnetite and skarn with magnetite and specularite in old mine dumps suggest copper-gold skarn-type mineralization. The company plans a 1,500-meter drill program starting in July to test strike and down-dip extensions of the identified copper-rich zones, targeting areas near the Jibosa and Tuesda shafts.
