Industrial heat production accounts for about 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions—more than all the world's cars, planes and ships combined—yet efforts to decarbonize this sector have lagged behind other industries. Brenmiller Energy Ltd. (NASDAQ: BNRG) is seeking to address this gap with its bGen thermal energy storage (TES) platform, a solid-state heat battery that stores renewable electricity as high-temperature heat for on-demand use as zero-emission steam, hot water or air.
The bGen system uses crushed volcanic rock to store heat, avoiding critical battery metals and allowing customers to charge when electricity prices are low and discharge during peak demand. To reduce upfront costs, Brenmiller recently launched BNRG360, an energy-as-a-service model where the company develops, owns and operates the clean energy systems, selling heat and power to industrial customers through long-term service agreements. This shift from equipment supplier to integrated energy infrastructure provider is designed to generate recurring revenue and deepen customer relationships.
The need for TES is projected to grow as electricity consumption rises, industrial electrification accelerates, and renewable energy penetration increases. According to a forecast cited by the company, the TES market could reach nearly $14 billion by 2032, growing at a compound annual growth rate of 10%. Additional demand is expected from artificial intelligence and data center expansion, which strain electrical grids and require flexible energy solutions.
Brenmiller is proving its technology at scale through a partnership with Tempo Beverages Ltd. The 32-megawatt-hour TES installation is designed to fully replace the site's fossil fuel boiler-based heat production, supplying continuous industrial process steam. The system began delivering steam in June and is expected to eliminate approximately 6,200 tons of CO₂ emissions annually. Brenmiller views the Tempo project as a key commercial reference that will demonstrate the scalability and reliability of its bGen platform under real-world conditions and serve as a blueprint for future deployments.
Looking ahead, Brenmiller's focus is on growth, cash flow generation and sustainable profitability. The company expects additional customers to join its BNRG360 platform and more successful project commissionings. As industrial companies face pressure to decarbonize, Brenmiller's thermal energy storage technology offers a viable alternative to burning fossil fuels, positioning the company to capture a share of the expanding clean energy market.
