Aquafil's Margin Resilience and Deleveraging Progress Highlight 2Q26 Results

Aquafil Group (ECNL.MI) reported second-quarter 2026 results that underscore the resilience of its improved margin profile, even as the company faced a sharp increase in raw material and transportation costs. Revenue declined 1.0% year-over-year to €135.7 million, with volumes broadly stable, while EBITDA fell 2.5% to €20.7 million. The EBITDA margin held at 15.3%, compared to 15.5% in the same period last year, a modest decline that management attributes to a timing mismatch between higher input costs and contractual price recovery rather than a deterioration in underlying cost performance.

Importantly, the company indicated that the majority of the second-quarter cost increase is being recovered through pricing in the third quarter, with additional recovery expected in the fourth quarter. This normal pricing lag of approximately three months means that key North American customers have begun incorporating higher raw-material pricing starting in August, and further adjustments are anticipated as the year progresses. This suggests that the margin pressure experienced in Q2 is temporary and that Aquafil's lower fixed cost base and operational efficiencies are providing a buffer even before a broader demand recovery takes hold.

Beyond margins, the balance sheet continues to improve, which remains a central part of the investment thesis. Net financial position (NFP) improved to €196.9 million from €209.5 million at year-end 2025, and NFP to LTM EBITDA improved to 2.64x from 2.89x. Management remains committed to deleveraging, and this progress could eventually reopen capacity for higher capital expenditures or external growth opportunities. The improved financial flexibility positions the company well as it heads into 2027.

However, the main execution requirement for the remainder of 2026 is now volume growth rather than margin recovery. First-grade volumes increased only 0.3% in the first half of the year, well below management's approximate 5% full-year objective. This implies that a meaningful acceleration in the second half is required to meet annual targets. Management continues to reaffirm its guidance, while acknowledging that Europe remains the principal area of demand uncertainty.

Stonegate Capital Partners, which updated coverage on Aquafil, notes that the quarter reinforces the company's progress in deleveraging and margin stability. The results indicate that even without a significant demand recovery, Aquafil is achieving operational improvements that support its financial health. The company's ability to manage input cost pressures and maintain margins, combined with a stronger balance sheet, provides a solid foundation for future growth.
