New Braunfels is taking significant steps to enhance its community infrastructure and address pressing housing issues. The City is preparing to apply for a grant to improve the County Line Memorial Trail, while also hosting a forum to discuss public-private partnerships aimed at boosting housing affordability.
Trail Improvements on the Horizon
The City of New Braunfels is preparing an application to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department for the Outdoor Recreation Legacy Partnership (ORLP) program for fiscal year 2027. This initiative aims to support new outdoor recreation opportunities and revitalize parks, according to New Braunfels News. A public hearing is scheduled for September 24th, 2026, at 1 PM at the Fischer Park Nature Education Center to gather community feedback on the proposed improvements to the County Line Memorial Trail.
The proposed project includes widening the 2.2-mile trail from 8 feet to 12 feet, improving pedestrian crossings, and upgrading park amenities. Additionally, the plan involves renovating Kraft Park with new playground equipment and expanded fitness areas. Some construction will occur within the 100-year floodplain, necessitating city permits and engineering analyses to ensure no increase in flood levels.
If the grant is approved, funds will be matched 50% with Park Development District funds to complete the improvements. The City Council's approval is required for the project to proceed.
Addressing Housing Affordability
In efforts to tackle housing affordability, District 3 City Councilmember D. Lee Edwards will host a community forum on October 1, 2026, from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM at New Braunfels City Hall. The forum, titled “Property Tax Exemptions for Housing: How Public Private Partnerships Support Housing Affordability in a Growing Community,” will feature a presentation by Summer Greathouse, a partner at Bracewell LLP, as reported by New Braunfels News.
With home prices and interest rates on the rise, nearly half of renter households spend over 30% of their income on housing costs. The forum will discuss how property tax exemptions for qualifying projects can help expand affordable housing options. Summer Greathouse, an expert in structuring public-private partnerships, will explain how these partnerships can benefit governmental entities and communities.
The event aims to provide a deeper understanding of accessible housing options and the benefits they bring to the community, offering a platform for residents to engage with experts on the topic.
Both initiatives highlight New Braunfels' commitment to improving community resources and addressing critical issues like housing affordability. Residents are encouraged to participate in these discussions to help shape the future of their community.
