New Braunfels is set to commence a significant infrastructure project aimed at enhancing road safety and pedestrian accessibility. According to New Braunfels News, construction will begin on November 2, 2026, at the Gruene Road/Post Road intersection. This nearly $700,000 project, funded by Roadway Impact Fees, aims to realign the intersection and convert it into a four-way stop to improve safety and reduce congestion.
The project, awarded to E-Z Bel Construction, includes installing new sidewalks, ADA-compliant curb ramps, updated pavement striping, and minor drainage improvements. Construction will primarily occur during the day, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., with completion expected by mid-February, weather permitting. Initially, no detours are planned, but drivers should anticipate delays. Detours are expected to start in early December, with updates available through the city's traffic alerts system.
Rio Microtransit Service Expands Hours
In response to growing demand, the City of New Braunfels is extending the operating hours of the Rio microtransit service. Starting November 1, 2026, Rio will begin service at 6:00 a.m. each day, an hour earlier than previously. This change aims to better accommodate commuters, early-shift workers, and students, according to New Braunfels News.
Since its inception in November 2025, Rio has completed over 74,500 rides, with shared rides making up 59% of trips. The service maintains high satisfaction rates, with an average rating of 4.9 stars. The fleet recently expanded from eight to ten minivans to meet demand. Standard fares are $4 per ride, with reduced fares available for seniors, veterans, students, and people with disabilities. More information can be found on the official Rio website.
New Trails Open at Northwest Park
Adding to the city's recreational offerings, New Braunfels has officially opened natural-surface trails at Northwest Park. As reported by New Braunfels News, the park spans over 140 acres, making it the city's largest public park. The trails, totaling 3.1 miles, are designed for low difficulty, making them accessible to most users.
The park, purchased by the New Braunfels Economic Development Corporation in 2024, features diverse landscapes, including woodlands and grasslands. The New Braunfels Parks Foundation contributed significantly to the project, donating land and financial support for trail construction. The park is open daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., with a primary trailhead located at 965 Conrads Lane. The city plans to present a long-term master plan for the park's development soon.
These developments reflect New Braunfels' commitment to improving infrastructure, enhancing public transportation, and expanding recreational spaces for its residents.
